What 2021 SEO Changes Can We Expect?

Google is consistently making changes in the future and constantly updating it’s algorithm. In 2021 a lot is going to change.

All Or Nothing Clicks

First, according to jumpshot, an SEO leader, “49% of all searches on Google result in a no click.”

This means half of all sites on Google won’t get traffic at all! People are either not finding what they want and giving up or… Their answer is being found on the first search, right then and there. This is a big SEO change we can expect going into 2021.

When we think about our target audience we want to ask ourselves, am I providing content and pages that provide THE answer to whatever my users may be searching for.

Organic Traffic Will Decline

Sure, competition on the web has increased with more and more people using Google, it would be more difficult to drive traffic your way. However, studies have shown an annual reduction in total visits produced by organic traffic by 6% year over year. This could be cause of more competition and algorithm changes.

I don’t expect organic traffic to continue to decrease at the same pace, however I do expect it to go down in the future.

Amazon And Google Competition Increase

Since 2013, Google has been going to war with Amazon, experiencing more lows than highs. It all started with Google shopping express, a service offering same day shipping on products for an annual fee of $95. Google even tried to deliver groceries to increase its competition.

In 2020, amid the Corona virus pandemic, “Google announced that it would take steps to bring more sellers and products onto its shopping site by waiving sales commissions and allowing retailers to use popular third-party payment and order management services like Shopify instead of the company’s own systems. [Past] commissions on Google Shopping range[d] from a 5 percent to 15 percent cut depending on the products.”

It’s no doubt Amazon has been winning the e-commerce war, and Google is threatened because this is advertising revenue lost.

In the future SEO of 2021, we can expect Google to continue to make changes and add heavy positive incentives for sellers as they compete against Amazon. I can see in the future Google’s partnership with Shopify being so good that users won’t even have to visit your site in order to land purchases.

Information In Rich Snippets

More people will get their information from rich snippets. Rich snippets are those banners that appear on Google as a box with information or multiple pull down tab as a question and an answer. With a click users are not directed to a site but rather an answer to the question posed by the user via rich snippet.

A study in 2020 found that 40% of users age 13-18 get the information they need from rich snippets without clicking through!

This doesn’t mean we’re not getting more traffic from Google cause their algorithm is evil. It means people have simple questions and it’s likely they just wanted a simple answer, so it wasn’t likely to generate a buy or lead.

A study in 2020 found that 20% of users age 20-30 get the information they need from rich snippets without clicking through.

Some industries have been completely changed by this and some remain undisrupted. Google is going to continue to make changes like this in order to provide the user a better experience.

One example of this is with flights, Google now allows you to view flights as a snippet instead of clicking through airline websites. You can search a flight number and Google will automatically provide you information so you can see if the flight is delayed, where it’s going, and more.

Google is going to continue to make more changes like this. Whether it’s in flights, sports scores, hotel availability, weather, lyrics, definitions… Google is constantly seeking to improve its service. Google is seeking to provide information to its users so they don’t have to go to a website, increasing user experience and timeliness.

With Google reducing traffic using rich snippets, what we will see is the users landing on your website will be rich users and you’ll be more likely to land a sale or convert a lead.
